Harbin, the capital city of Heilongjiang in the far northern reaches of China is beset by snow and winds dropping the temperature to around -30C (-22F) through the midst of winter. It is also one of the most interesting cities to visit in China, so get your parka.
Harbin was key to the Manchu empire, and later, due to it’s proximity to Russia, was heavily influenced by its neighbor to the north. In fact Harbin was controlled outright by Russia several times and its imprint remains well in tact today. Many old Russian buildings in good preserve dot the city. As well as buildings you find many Russian people in Harbin be it for vacation, trade or shopping.
The winter is honestly the best time to visit as this is the time Harbin sets itself apart. The city is nationally renowned for its ice sculpture festivals and ice hotels. Recently downhill skiing facilities have been improved allowing more people to become accustom to the sport. Ten years ago, only 500 people in China could ski. This year, an estimated 5,000,000 Chinese will visit ski resorts. Enthusiastic Chinese stream to hills each winter and if nothing else it’s fun just to watch.
That being said, summer in Harbin is nothing to balk at. Trips outside the city will allow you to see some of the less tamed countryside and some of the indigenous wildlife. This is Siberian Tiger country, and, although there is likely less chance of seeing one in the wild than being hit by lightning 7 times in a row, there are safari parks that feature the animals. It may be a zoo, but the chance to see the some 70 cats at the park is worth taking if you can.
